Before masters of the medium Stan Lee and Jack Kirby created some of the world’s greatest Super Heroes, they made monsters. Their creations rampaged and bellowed across the colorful pages of 10 cent comics found in newsstands across the country. Lee and Kirby’s strange and astonishing tales tended to reflect the fears and hopes of the 1960s.
Monsters were born from radioactive accidents against the backdrop of the Cold War, and conquerors from the stars declared the Earth for.their own as the Space Race marched on. In later years, more Marvel creators would shape their creatures as signs of the times. During the 1970s and 1980s, legends like werewolves and vampires were transformed into modern monsters such as the Werewolf By Night and Morbius the Living Vampire.
Monsters also became contemplative and complicated anti-heroes, including the Hulk. As the 20th century came to a close, the end of the world took hold in the collective consciousness, and, in the next millennium, monsters that could bring about Armageddon were born. Apocalypse Beast, Marvel Zombies, and the Leviathon Mother were almost the end of it all until brave and brilliant heroes banded together to stop them.
No matter the era, Marvel’s monsters highlight the courage of characters, both average and extraordinary, who stood in their way. This collection is a peek back through time where voices of everyday people often told larger-than-life stories of extra-sized extraterrestrials, glowering giants, and mysterious misfits. In a world filled with beings that defy belief, monsters stand out from the crowd, and not just because of their size. A monster is a creature we don’t understand yet. Why is it here? What does it want? Answering those questions are just the first steps in turning monsters from “it” to “them.”
